TV Series ›It's a Big Big World‹
40 ½ hr episodes

The number one children’s series on PBS. Optix delivers a beautiful, brightly colored package - a cross between puppetry and animation.

"It's a Big Big World" takes kids into the rainforest, high atop the World Tree, home to a diverse group of animal characters. There they all accompany Snook, an energetic giant tree sloth, and his pals. It's a combination of an ancient form of puppetry, Bunraku, and computer-animated sets.

BBW is created in "Shadowmation," a process that combines puppetry with computer animation, puppets (some controlled by up to three puppeteers) are filmed against a blue background and then dropped into a richly colored, computer-generated world. Optix created the 3D environment; a standard-defintion resolution model for live on-set compositing, and the full-res HD set which was used for the final compositing. Elaborate camera moves translated into 3D camera data for Maya, which was used to render CG plates. The plates were brought into Mistika in layers, and our artists keyed the blue screen material, and seamlessly blended the virtual world with the real props and actors.
